Vseviov: speed at which Allied Forces move in Europe must be improved

12. September 2017 - 13:00

General Darren W. McDew, commander, U.S. Transportation Command, and Jonatan Vseviov, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, discussed questions regarding the deployment of forces in Europe at their meeting.

Permanent Secretary Vseviov stated that the United States is continuously improving the strategic movement of its follow-up forces to Europe and within Europe, and that Estonia has its own role and interests in this.

‘Estonia is actively working together with its Allies in NATO and the Member States of the European Union in order to make the movement of supplies and units in Europe both smoother and faster,’ said Vseviov. ‘We must become faster when it comes to moving our forces, which requires corresponding planning, practice, infrastructure development, and the simplification of paperwork. In the case of the latter, we see great potential for the European Union in particular. ’

During its current presidency of the Council of the European Union, Estonia has emphasised the need to deal with simplifying the cross border movement of forces in Europe.

US Transportation Command, one of nine unified commands of the United States Department of Defence, organises the supplying of armed forces and the moving of units at the global level around the world.

During his visit General McDew also met with the Deputy Commander of the Estonian Defence Forces, Brigadier General Indrek Sirel. He also laid a wreath at the Defence Forces Cemetery and visited the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence and Ämari Air Base.
