At her meeting with the Minister of Defence, United States Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who is on a visit to Estonia, said that Estonia is a reliable ally for the United States and a trailblazer in the field of e-government and cyber security.

“When it comes to the security of Europe and the United States, the Internet has become a battlefield of strategic importance. Estonia has made outstanding progress in developing a free and secure Internet,” said Senator Shaheen. “I have held a number of discussions today on how we could strengthen the cooperation between our two countries in this area.”

Minister of Defence Hannes Hanso thanked Senator Jeanne Shaheen for the long-term political support of Estonia by the United States Congress. “Estonia and the United States enjoy close bilateral defence relations, and we are thankful for the support of the United States in helping develop our national defence.”

Bilateral defence relations culminated in the arrival of Javelin anti-tank missiles in Estonia at the end of last week. The missile system was acquired through funding set aside by Congress for European security measures.
