NATO Defense College senior course participants learn about Estonian defence policy
From 18 to 20 June, Estonia is being visited by a 120-member delegation from the NATO Defense College, with the aim of familiarizing themselves with Estonian defence policy and defence planning.

In a meeting with NATO Defense College Director Academic Operations Brig. Gen. Patrick Desjardins, Ministry of Defence Under Secretary Mikk Marran said he recognized the importance of the NATO Defense College in developing strategic thinking both within NATO and in cooperation with partners.

“The visit of the NATO Defense College, aimed at broadening views, is well-timed considering the geopolitical tense situation,” said Marran. “As the course members are tomorrow’s major players in national and NATO positions, it’s important that they have knowledge about developments in our region.”

Today at the Ministry of Defence the course members will be given an overview of Estonian defence policy, defence planning and the structure and functions of the Defence Forces. The college’s senior course members will also be introduced to the Tallinn-based NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence. In the afternoon, the college delegation will visit the Ämari Air Force Base.

Every year, the NATO Defense College organizes study trips for its senior course participants to NATO members, NATO staffs, and structural units in many European countries and the US with the goal of getting a closer view of NATO and its members’ defence and security policy and defence planning.

The study trips to NATO’s members and partners are one form of study for the college. On these trips, the senior specialists in the field of defence from various countries see first-hand the visions that different countries have of national defence and have the opportunity to talk to leaders at the strategic and political level.

Founded in 1951, the NATO Defense College is an international educational institution aimed at training NATO’s senior officials and senior officers to ensure sufficient training for future NATO-related positions.

The curriculum of the college focuses on strategic politico-military themes, including international organizations, conflicts and international relations. The most renowned alumni include former NATO secretary general Jaap de Hoop Sheffer.
