Today, in Pärnu, at the welcoming ceremony for the best members of the Defence League and Women's Voluntary Defence Organization, Minister of Defence Jüri Luik said that each volunteer defender of Estonia is important, and that society greatly appreciates their contribution.

“The Defence League and Women's Voluntary Defence Organization are the best examples of how the future of our country is in all of our hands. Thanks to your contribution, our country is getting stronger and better with each passing day,” said Luik.

The Minister also thanked the families of Defence League and Women's Voluntary Defence Organization members for their understanding of how one or several family members must, from time to time, go to the forest to take part in training exercises.

According to Luik, the strength of the Defence League in defending the country lies in free will, motivation and skills, with volunteers having great strength and a deterring effect on opponents.

“Our country is protected because there are people in every corner of Estonia who know how to react to crisis situations and emergencies,” said Luik.

The Minister emphasised the role of the Defence League in national military defence and wished them luck in their preparations for the large-scale training exercise Siil 2018 (Hedgehog 2018), set to take place in May.

Regarding the activities of Women's Voluntary Defence Organization, the Minister emphasised the need to increase the inclusion of women in national defence, in terms of performing military as well as supporting tasks.

In addition to Minister of Defence Jüri Luik, the best Defence League and Women's Voluntary Defence Organization members were greeted by Commander of the Defence Forces General Riho Terras.
