During his appearance at the international security forum GLOBSEC 2018, in Bratislava, Minister of Defence Jüri Luik stated that NATO is capable of providing effective deterrence on the Alliance’s eastern wing. According to the Minister of Defence, this is possible only through close cooperation between Europe and the United States.
‘NATO must further improve its ability to assist Alliance members that have come under attack, the main emphasis must therefore be on reaction time and raising the level of readiness of forces,’ emphasised Luik. In addition, it is necessary to practice the movement of forces between NATO’s different parts, which has not been practiced at a large scale since the end of the Cold War, said the Minister of Defence.
Luik highlighted the cooperation taking place in the area of military mobility as an excellent example of the common interests of and cooperation between the EU and NATO. He emphasised that this work should not be bogged down by bureaucratic processes. This why it is it would represent an important step forward if, according to Luik, the European Union and NATO member countries would, at the summer summits of their organisations, make the political promise to speed up border crossing procedures for Allied forces.
The Minister of Defence participated in the GLOBSEC 2018 forum’s NATO themed panel along with former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Philip Breedlove; NATO Assistant Secretary General Tacan Ildem; and retired general John Allen, President of the Brookings Institution.
Minister of Defence Jüri Luik met in Bratislava with Minister of Defence of the Slovak Republic Peter Gajdoš, with whom he discussed the topics of the forthcoming NATO Summit, in Brussels, and the available opportunities for defence cooperation within the European Union.
Luik thanked Slovakia for participating in the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence, located in Tallinn. In July, Slovakia will be sending its own company sized unit to join the NATO battle group stationed in Latvia.
