Luik warned of growing populism in global politics

In his opening speech at the Annual Baltic Conference on Defence (ABCD), Minister of Defence Jüri Luik expressed concern that populist forces have called into question the role of international organisations.

‘Those organisations were born from the ashes of World War II and are the only method for preventing war and bloodshed,' said Luik. If we were to adopt the principle of every man for himself, it would be most harmful to small countries in particular, admitted Luik.

According to the Minister of Defence, NATO has been successful because, in the case of disagreements between members as well as in the face of external threats, the unity of the alliance has not been sacrificed.

‘It is essential to remember that the focal point of Russia's anti-Western strategy is directed towards undermining the unity of NATO,’ noted Luik.

According to Luik, the collective deterrence and defence posture has been significantly strengthened following the summits in Wales, Warsaw and Brussels.

'This does not mean that security has reached the final stage of completion,' stated Luik. In his opening speech at the Annual Baltic Conference on Defence (ABCD), which began today, Minister of Defence Luik noted that in order to be able to react quickly to the threats coming from the east, NATO must have relevant plans in place, which have actually been rehearsed with various training exercises.

He added that NATO must be militarily and politically ready to quickly react in the Nordic countries and the Baltic Sea region to threats coming from the east, where the key question is, above all, the strengthening of forces and the ensuring of military mobility.

The Annual Baltic Conference on Defence is being organised for the twelfth year by the International Centre For Defence and Security in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence. The topics of the one day conference are transatlantic relations, defence expenditures by allies, and the strengthening of the security of the Baltic Republics.
