As of yesterday, Minister of Defence Jüri Luik is participating in the two-day meeting of NATO Ministers of Defence, in Brussels, in order to discuss the topics of the forthcoming NATO Summit, the most important of which are the reinforcement of forces and the ensuring of mobility, with consideration also being given to improving the Alliance’s Command Structure. The focus today will be on NATO and European Union cooperation, and Minister of Defence Luik will also be meeting with Swedish Minster of Defence Peter Hultqvist.

‘It is important for Estonia that Member States reach a common understanding on how to reinforce forces with additional units and supplies in the event of a military conflict,' said Luik, according to whom NATO possess considerable capabilities to support its allies, although since the Alliance's focus has been elsewhere, the large-scale movement of forces in Europe has not been practiced.

Yesterday afternoon, the ministers of defence of Estonia, Latvia, and Denmark discussed the opportunity to improve the Command Structure for Allied forces in the Baltic Sea region. In addition Estonia is participating in the initiation of military cooperation with Germany and France.

The ministers of defence are meeting for two days in the North-Atlantic format, focusing in their discussions on strengthening the deterrence and defence posture, adapting NATO’s military Command Structure, strengthening forces, logistics, strengthening the sea based posture, and cyber defence. In addition, currently underway operations and the fight against terrorism will be discussed.
